The big learner
relay has taken place every year since 2013 when it was launched
by Lou Walsh, an inspirational driving instructor from the South
of England. The idea was to raise money each year for Children
In Need and over the last 9 years has raised around £500,000 for
the charity. 2023 would see the Big Learner Relay hold it's 10th
and final event. There would be no more after this.
Very sadly and
suddenly, the event organiser Louise Walsh died of a brain
haemorrhage. This shocked the whole UK driving instructor
industry massively. So many people looked up to her like she was
the Queen of the industry. She helped so many people, learners
and instructors through youtube videos in lockdown. This sad
news meant the final Big Learner relay couldn't happen.
What does
this mean?
Well here in
Whitby the Whitby Driving Instructors Association came up
with an idea, like many more instructors are doing throughout
the country to raise money for Children In Need once again. We
took part in a 7-car convoy drive around town, fitted out with
spots which pupils had signed and flags attached to the cars. It
was a really lovely morning and some even had pupils driving the
cars! We raised £500.50p for Children in Need, thank you for
your support. Here are some photos of the day.
